The Oriflame, probably the earliest reference to the Gonfalon-banner, what we might call a flag today.This medieval painting represents: Philip Augustus raising the oriflamme on 24 June 1190, by Pierre-Henri Revoil.

  • The Gonfalon is one of the earliest documented forms of banners in western European culture circa 1124 France.

  • Their use is reminiscent of the Vexillion standards used by the Roman legion. 

  • Often suspended from a pole, they were displayed at state and religious ceremonies.

  • This type of banner is the accepted format to emblazon personal arms in most living history groups.

Our two color medieval pennocils are a variation of "flags" borne on spears to indicate the presence of a noble person, can be documented to the 13th century and perhaps earlier in Western European culture.
